Freelance permit or a company in Ajman NuVentures Centre: which you actually need

Both give you a legal way to work and both can carry a residence visa. They differ in what you can sign, how you get paid and what happens when the work grows.

Independent professionals moving to the UAE face an early fork: take a freelance permit, or register a company. Both are legitimate, both are available, and both can support a residence visa. They are frequently presented as interchangeable, cheaper and more expensive versions of the same thing, and they are not.

The difference is whether a separate legal entity exists. A freelance permit licenses you, the individual, to provide services. A company licence creates an entity that is distinct from you and that holds the business. Almost every practical difference flows from that one distinction.

What changes when an entity exists

Contracting is the first. A company signs agreements in its own name, which is what many corporate clients and virtually all procurement processes expect. A freelance permit means you sign personally. Plenty of clients are perfectly comfortable with that, but some are not, and the ones that are not tend to be the larger ones with standard supplier terms.

Liability is the second. A limited company confines liability to the entity and its capital in the ordinary course. A permit held personally does not create that separation. For low risk advisory work the distinction may never matter. For anything where an error could produce a real claim, it is the whole reason company structures exist.

Growth is the third. A company can take on a second shareholder, bring in an investor, employ people under its own sponsorship and, eventually, be sold. A freelance permit can do none of those, because there is nothing to hold a share of. If there is any prospect of the work becoming a business with other people in it, the entity is the thing that makes that possible without starting over.

A freelance permit licenses you. A company licence creates something separate from you. Nearly every practical difference follows from that.

Banking, which is where it gets concrete

A company opens a corporate account. A freelancer generally operates through a personal account, sometimes with a business flavoured variant depending on the bank. That is workable at small scale and it becomes awkward quickly.

Mixing business receipts and personal spending in one account makes bookkeeping harder, makes a corporate tax position harder to evidence, and makes it harder to demonstrate to a client or a platform that you are running a business rather than receiving payments. It also complicates the moment you want to hand the records to an accountant.

None of this is a reason to avoid a freelance permit outright. It is a reason to be clear that if you expect meaningful volume, multiple clients, or any need to show clean financials, the corporate account that comes with an entity is worth the difference in cost.

Cost, honestly compared

A freelance permit is normally cheaper than a company licence, and in a low cost emirate the gap narrows considerably. That matters, because the comparison people imagine is a cheap permit against an expensive company, when in Ajman the company end of the comparison is already at the bottom of the national market.

Both carry the same downstream costs once a residence visa is involved: establishment registration, entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, stamping, and mandatory medical insurance. Those are immigration costs rather than licence costs, and they do not change because the licence is lighter.

So the real comparison is the licence fee difference alone, against the contracting, liability, banking and growth differences above. For a lot of people that difference is small enough that the entity wins on merit rather than on price.

  • Permit: you contract personally, no separate entity, no shareholding
  • Company: contracts, liability separation, shareholders, hiring, saleable
  • Both can carry a residence visa with the same immigration steps
  • Both carry mandatory medical insurance once resident
  • In a low cost emirate the licence fee gap is narrower than people expect

When the permit is genuinely the better answer

It is the better answer more often than a company registration agent will tell you. If you work alone, for a small number of clients who are comfortable contracting with an individual, in a field where professional liability is not a live concern, and you have no intention of hiring or bringing in a partner, the permit does the job at lower cost with less administration.

It is also a reasonable starting point when you are not yet certain the work will sustain itself. Moving from a permit to a company later means registering the company rather than converting anything, which is a clean step, and the cost of having started light is only the permit fee you already spent.

What it is not is a way to avoid the obligations that come with earning money here. Income is income, tax registration follows the structure you hold, and the rules about what a permit lets you do are worth reading rather than assuming.

How to decide in five minutes

Ask whether any client will require a company on the contract. Ask whether an error in your work could produce a claim worth more than you would want to pay personally. Ask whether you might add a person, a partner or an investor within two years. Ask whether you need a corporate bank account for credibility or for volume.

One clear yes points to a company. Four clear noes point to a permit. A mixture usually points to a company as well, because the gap in cost is smaller than the cost of restructuring later, and because the company is the option that does not need revisiting if the answers change.
